Gasoline, natural gas, biogas, Hydrogen, Ethanol and Methanol – alternative fuels are on the rise in the world of off-highway. Such engines require an ignition spark to start the combustion of the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. This spark is generated at the spark plug with the help of the ignition coil.

Bosch offers spark plugs and ignition coils for a wide range of applications – from chainsaws via generators to ship engines and anything in between.

With more than 120 years of experience in ignition systems and decades of experience in the rough environment of the Off-Highway, Bosch is a leading supplier of ignition systems.

The international sales and logistics network of Bosch ensures quick and global access to Bosch spare parts.

Industrial Spark Plugs

Many engine manufacturers around the world rely on the high quality, reliability and performance of Bosch industrial spark plugs for their gas and alternative fuel engines.

Bosch industrial spark plugs are trusted by leading engine manufacturers worldwide for their high quality, reliability, and performance in gas and alternative fuel engines.

The new M14 industrial spark plug family from Bosch has been developed specifically for use in such engines, regardless of the type of fuel used.

Ignition coils

In gas engines, the air-fuel mixture is ignited in the combustion chamber by an ignition spark. In order for the spark plug to produce the spark, an ignition voltage of up to 45,000 Volt is required. This voltage peak is generated by the ignition coil from the standard voltage of the machine electrical system and transferred to the spark plug at the moment of ignition.

The ignition coil acts like a transformer. Using two coils wound from copper wire, one inside the other, the ignition coil transforms the electrical energy from supply voltage into high voltage, stores it briefly and then emits a high voltage current pulse to the spark plug.

Advantages at a glance

  • Flexible design relating to connection geometry (primary connection, high-voltage connection), installation position and secondary parameters
  • Small dimensions, low weight
  • Portfolio of medium to very high energy level for all common combustion procedures, including Hydrogen engines
  • High reliability, derived from decades of production and development for commercial vehicles

Spark plug components

In the context of modern natural gas and biogas engines used for power generation, the optimization of spark plugs is essential. This optimization is crucial for achieving minimal emissions while ensuring maximum efficiency and economic viability.

To ensure that these optimized solutions meet mission-critical reliability targets, Bosch supplies plug customizers with base products for M12, M14, and M18 thread sizes. These base products include technical ceramics, semi-finished base plugs, and optimized gaskets and seals.

Thanks to sector-specific expertise and many years of engineering experience, Bosch solutions are specifically tailored to the off-highway and large engine market, with production facilities in Germany and India.

New type formula for Bosch spark plugs

It’s time for more clarity – with ongoing developments, the well-known and established type formula format for Bosch plugs has been updated.

The type formula describes the most important features of the spark plug and provides detailed technical specifications, from the electrodes to the connection terminal. The new format creates more clarity by showing extended design information.

It will be applied to newly released spark plugs and to selected existing plugs.

As an example the existing 7341 spark plug will be updated from existing type formula FR 3 DII 332 to FXR 6 DIT 0SL.
